I pay for the Nabu Casa subscription for remote access to Home Assistant. Mostly as a way to give them money for a great service, but it’s convenient and felt pretty secure. It should be the only remote way into Home Assistant. About an hour ago I got a login attempt notice that an IP was trying to access API/config. The IP is in some bad IP databases. What I found interesting was that the log shows an AI bot. A Google Gemini bot specifically. Makes me worry that AI is going to make yet another aspect of life frustrating and unfun.

As my kids want their own rooms in the future I’ll need to downsize a bit. Is there a list for recommended 10” Equipment? Any help appreciated. My research so far turned always in the direction of get rack bars and a 3D printer ( or shops selling the 3d prints)

I had the following issue: Stremio would open normally and even load subtitles but would not load videos at all in Linux Mint 22.3. Other people on github have had the same issue.

I have a minipc with proxmox on it. I have tried caddy in a lxc to set up DNS challenges to my owned domain and I set the url in my router to point to the IP (for example, proxmox.DOMAIN.com could be 192.168.10.22). The hope was to have everything local within my house and nothing needs the internet to be accessed. Some services I can host in proxmox NEED https to use, which I could not get working with my own certs or ones proxmox could make, thus Caddy. However, I get proxmox with a proper cert, but i cannot get any of the other services from proxmox working. If I were doing it all manually, I would expect DNS issues with the domain, but from what I understand, Caddy by default does wildcard domains which should mean that my services should work. but they do not. Networking is new to me so perhaps I am missing something obvious. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi! So I’m considering…maybe having an NPU or something similar to be hooked to my proxmox server, which runs in a mini PC. It’s a EliteDesk 800 micro form factor. It has a Core i5 8500 CPU, which at the moment of purchase was good enough for live encoding HEVC video on Jellyfin…that was my main concern back then. But I’d like to consider the possibility of hooking maybe some docker instances or other containers to some local-only AI acceleration. Is there any NPU or cheap GPU I could hook on USB to this proxmox server to run? Has it been done before?

For those who don’t know, playit.gg is a free/cheap service for exposing self-hosted local game servers to the wider internet.

I’ll just provide my own example: my homelab consists of 6 Kubernetes nodes placed across the country. Some differ by ISP, some are placed in different cities, one is hosted on a cloud provider. Basically it’s a very cheap variant of geo-replicating my workloads.

I’ve started a homelab a few months ago, and since then it looked more or less like this:

All services have been migrated, now including the podcast. It was stressful, because Castopod has zero such documentation. I started with Dokuwiki (files and folders), then worked my way through migrating Flarum from MySQL to MariaDB. Spun up some new services via PostgreSQL and SQlite. Flarum at least gave me the experience of gaining some foundational understanding needed to then migrate Castopod via mysqldump, adjusting permissions, rewriting .htaccess to redirect to a simple migration.html page and eventually flip DNS after carefully adjust cron and tasks:list expected by php spark for Castopod.

I was just looking to plug a new zigbee coordinator into a POE switch today, then thought - that’s going to be on the wrong VLAN, or, did I trunk the uplink…?

Oracle recently changed their free VPS allowances, taking down my Nextcloud instance. I’m moving my file sync to a local machine but was wondering if anyone had any experience with alternatives, as Nextcloud AIO was a major pain in the ass to set up last time.

I think a couple of months ago I found out about Dawarich here on this community as the author posted here. I installed a couple of days ago on a VM I run and have been impressed so far. I started logging track 10 years ago when I found out about OsmAND and never really knew what I would do with those tracks until I discovered Dawarich. Interesting piece of software. With the “trips” function, it reminded me of my trip to Scotland and all the places I had seen on which day.

Pretty much what the title says. I added an OPNSense router to my homelab about a month or two ago, along with a Ubiquiti Managed Layer-2 Switch and a Linksys AP with Openwrt flashed onto it so I could get the full modem –> router –> switch –> AP combo and freedom to do what I want (VLANs, real firewall rules, eventual IDS/IPS and QoS planned).

I’ve been increasingly getting into the idea of hosting some servers for classic PC games like Counter Strike 1.6 and various Half-Life mods, but I’m curious what the consensus is for what the best options are for doing so right now.

I currently use Borg for all my backups. To have a remote backup I placed my old Synology NAS at a family member and connected it to tailscale (via a tailscale docker container). That way I could also can do Borg backups to that remote NAS.

So, just as the title says, I wanna know if anyone here uses a proxy as a way to access a private network instead of a VPN.

Hi, folks! I was happy to finally get my domain set up and directing traffic to a couple of hosted services. Unfortunately, my domain only works from external networks and not my own. I can ping my domain from my internal network just fine, and I can see a response time of 0.12ms against my public facing IP address, but putting the URL into my web browser to hit my web apps just times out. If I run the test on my phone, same thing; however, if I disconnect from wi-fi and do the same thing over cell network, the page works as I’d expect. My friends are able to access my hosted services via URL as I’d expect.

So I have a new desktop PC and my old desktop PC that was broken for some time, now revived and I want to make it a home server and selfhost various apps.

I was reading a homelab discussion about NUTs (Network UPS Tools) that left me scratching my head and wondering “…why? Is complexity for complexities sake part of homelabs? Isn’t this a huge overkill for one machine? Just…use a UPS? "

I’m looking to buy some security cameras for my mother in law. I currently have a small server with plenty of storage at my place that I’d prefer to use on at least a temporary basis to keep costs down. Are there any self hostable cameras that support a built in VPN? I currently use tailscale for my network but I’m open to learning something else. Alternatively, can they run over a tailscale subnet router? I don’t use that yet but if I could place a cheap node in her place to help her access footage and my other services via subnet routing I’ll do that too.

So with the most recent Spotify nonsense I’ve finally had enough and I’m going back to mp3. Unfortunately, I haven’t had to do this since Bush left office and I do not have the free time to manually sort and document every single file I have. I’ve been using MusicBrainz Picard but I don’t know if the learning curve is steeper than I have traction for or if it’s just really picky.

Hi. Sorry for the vague title. Nowadays I’m using multiple computers and get to need files and such from other machines pretty often. My music and photos library has also increased and it’s getting much harder to maintain with it being scattered across many machines. Basically I’m trying to have a photo library and plain files(documents, music, etc) shared across computers.

Has anyone here had much success with automated book downloads and a self-hosted library? I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to get shelfmark and calibre-web automated to work for me.

Edit: forgot to mention that I’m based in Europe, which might be relevant for which devices are easily available.

I was reading on the web that clamav is not an “endpoint antivirus solution” but at the same time its called the best antivirus for gnu/linux and gnu/linux servers. Is worth for a home server?

Are mini stick PCs practical to set up as a media player, eg with jellyfin? Some advantages are the small form factor that plugs straight into the HDMI port, and flexibility/privacy vs using a dongle from a shitty company like amazon/google/roku.

I read today about VyOS and I really like the idea and approach but I am not sure how it compares to Opnsense in terms of performance and features. I know it doesn’t have a GUI, which is a bit of a bummer for me.

Wireguard is blocked in my country, so I no longer can use Tailscale or other Wireguard-based solutions. My home server is behind a NAT. What other ways of secure private connection can I use?

So…I was wondering. Is there any backup tape system that would be advisable to use for backing up some TBs? I guess I need it to be USB, as the server is a micro PC, one of those tiny ones you can hang from behind a monitor. It’s an HP ProDesk.

tl;dr- my favorite container is the firefox browser. My work browser is seriously locked down, so I just go to my Homer page and click firefox and a firefox instance opens inside my edgelord browser with all my bookmarks and extensions. It’s a simple thing, but easily the service I use more than any other.(compose pasted at bottom)
