American women in World War II became involved in many tasks they rarely had before; as the war involved global conflict on an unprecedented scale, the absolute urgency of mobilizing the entire population made the expansion of the role of women inevitable. Their services were recruited through a variety of methods, including posters and other print advertising, as well as popular songs. This photo by Esther Bubley shows a woman being trained by the Capitol Transit Company (in Washington D.C.) to operate a streetcar.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition. Sekka also worked in lacquer and in a variety of other media.

Johann Ludwig Bleuler, sometimes called Louis was a Swiss painter, landscape artist and publisher. He was born in Feuerthalen. His father, Johann Heinrich, was a landscape painter and member of the Schweizer Kleinmeister [sv] (lesser masters). His older brother, Johann Heinrich, the Younger (1787–1857) also became a painter. He began his artistic training in his father’s workshop, where he learned painting and draftsmanship.
