Perhaps most of this is well known to others, but I hadn’t thought about how vulnerable so many weeds are right before winter sets in.

I bought some cheapie bean starts from the grocery store this spring, I was complaining that nothing was happening, then the long bean emerged. Now Ive got a crop of hilariously long beans. I tried this one and maybe it wasn’t ready yet as there was a sort of paste in-between the beans pods and nothing was really defined. Edible but not enjoyable.

They’re finally flowering! Well two are! Exciting! Next year I’m going to try a different pepper, but mostly because we can buy jalapeños for cheap cheap at the store.

I’m quite proud of this one. I usually only buy discounted plants - because if / when I kill them, I don’t feel that guilty.

Have really been enjoying the blooms on the bellflower! The bee seems to enjoy it as well :)

Out of everything in my garden, the local bees love my maypops (passionfruit) the most. It’s not uncommon to see three or four of them competing for the same flower. Some days I find hundreds of bees and wasps on the vine at a time.

Several months back I started narrowleaf milkweed plants (seeds from livemonarch.com). About a week ago I noticed the first caterpillar, and the next day the second. Today the one at the top of the photo left the plant and started looking for a spot to pupate. Also today, found 4 (!!) more caterpillars amongst the plants. I am beyond thrilled, I never expected to get monarchs actually laying eggs on these plants so soon.

Photo is from the ones I already very carefully, removed from my lemon tree. These are saddleback slug catapillars.

Is this a watering issue, nutrients, blight, or something else?

Have a longleaf pine I’ve been trying to grow in the SC Sandhills which has mostly been a trooper but suddenly a lot of the leaves turned brown and the remaining ones turned yellow. This is what also happened for the only other one on the property before it gave up and died very shortly thereafter the better part of a month ago.

This snake plant has been through a lot. My best friend/roommate and I went through one of the hardest times of our lives together, as our apartment was almost completely gutted in a fire. My snake plant survived and is thriving, but I can’t say exactly the same for hers. We made it out okay, but this once-strong, stiff snake plant is now thinner, smaller, softer, and perhaps not long for this world.

So my original intent when I started this a couple years ago was to fill in between the wood with aggregate. Given my current health issues, and the fact that I’ll likely need to clear the snow, I decided to change the pathway to wood.

Tobacco hawk, moth. Found adjacent to my tomato plants, this moth will likely spawn tomato hornworms which will be devastating. But it’s part of the ecosystem. Without them parasitic wasps will not have food and would not survive. So keeping a few pests means success for their predators as well.

Potato harvest is excellent this year! My tomatoes are okay, but I have not gotten as many as id like. Feel free to laugh with me on my pathetic corn lol

Pickled all my garden beans, was gonna save some by freezing for a family dinner, but the recipe I used called for 1.5lbs, and well I had exactly 700grams, so I used them all.

These plants on my balcony were nothing but work for most of the year, but it’s finally starting to pay off.

Greetings, I recently started a new raised bed in the yard out of old galvanized metal roof panels I had laying around as I ran out of room in the greenhouse’s. Planted some leafy greens such as Vates Blue Scotch Kale and Black Simpson lettuce. Seedlings just started to come out and I was impressed with how quickly the Cardinals came out to mow them all down. I put a quick screen over it for now to give the seedlings a chance, but man, wasn’t expecting that so quick. Anybody else run into that situation as well? Do they eventually let up once the plants mature a bit? Thanks for reading and Cheers!

Helloo again gardeners! I am once again doubting myself so thought to maybe ask! Anyone familiar with harvesting hops? Advice says to listen to the prazzle and smell it. I have nothing to compare to..! It smells great! Fruity and hoppy :) Not really sticky but definitely some prazzle crunch and some visible yellow yumyum Lot of cones are quite small but theres was very dry weather last few weeks and I wasn’t home to water, so I’m guessing they’re done growing because they feel about the same as the biggies.

This partridge pea was folding up its blooms and leaves to close shop for the night but this oddly gray bumblebee wasn’t budging from what I’m hoping is a deep nap. A couple others I chaos sowed grew as well but are runtier and sport maybe a couple flowers, this one however has dozens and dozens of blooms everywhere and there’s always some sort of buzz around it.

These grow like weeds and are heat resistant in this climate. Local groceries have the gall to charge $2 per fruit.

A 12oz Cherokee Purple. Delicious, but I do need to find an earlier black tomato variety to add to the mix next year.

I recently noticed these fig suckers growing out of a stump at my new place in the PNW. Would I be ok to let them grow as is (It’s a good location with full sun) or try to turn them into cuttings and plant them elsewhere?

First year growing beans, and they’ve been doing really good. I’ve blanched them for about 2 minutes, followed by an ice bath. Dried and then put in bags to freeze. First batch I don’t think I fully dried before freezing and had a lot of ice crystals in the bag. Second batch was much more dry after blanching, but still had a bunch of ice crystals. Wondering if thats normal, or will reduce how long they stay good?

In Florida, everything in the garden, even the stuff that should be heat tolerant is burning to a crisp with 100+ degree temps every freakin day.

Not a very strong smell, vaguely smells like chocolate :)

Satisfying work.

Bumblebees and honeybees alike go gaga for artichoke flowers. They really have to dig in there to get to the nectar, but given how many other wildflowers are currently blooming in my yard right now that don’t require spelunking that the bees could be feeding from instead, the artichokes must be producing some really premium nectar to be worth the extra trouble!

And some more.

I’ve got about a dozen tomato plants of different varieties in containers on my northeast-facing deck (mid-Atlantic region of the US), which receives about 6 hours of direct sun exposure per day. Some of them have developed these black splotches on their leaves. Based on these articles on Southern Living and Old Farmer’s Almanac, it looks like this might be a sign of Septoria leaf spot. Is that what this looks like to you all as well?

I have no idea what kind of pepper plant it is, my neighbor gifted it to me after I helped her take out her recycling and she said she can’t remember what kind it was lol

Just yesterday these figs were about half as big and green. Every time they ripen like this on my tree it blows me away.

I hear growing tea plants can be quite challenging. Looks like I have 6 attempts to figure it out…

It’s just a small thing but I had some eggs and toast the other morning and remembered a friend’s suggestion to mix fresh basil into my scrambled eggs… so I literally walked onto my balcony and harvested some basil! Mind = blown. I grew that basil! I’ve been lovingly tending to it on my balcony for weeks and weeks and now I get to EAT it!!

I am slowly working on creating a. Permaculture garden/ food Forest sort of thing and got these large clay drainage pipe sections for free but I’m not sure what would go well planting in them if I’m using them as stationary planters / small raised gardens, looking for perennial edibles preferably, but honestly any and all recommendations are welcome.

Agave eggersiana growing outside in Missouri, USA. When night time temps are below 60f/15c I take it inside. Last year while outside it turned this light green that I don’t think seems very healthy and I was hoping it’d improve this summer but it hasn’t. Maybe I need to add nitrogen to the soil? Pot drains well.

I planted a Penstemon earlier this spring. The last time I checked on it I thought it looked a little strange. It turns out there’s a New England Aster growing in the same space. I’d like to be able to salvage both plants since that’s the best looking aster in my garden, currently. Everything else has been devastated by lace bugs, but this one only has minor damage. Do I need to dig up both?

Heya! In addition to terrestrial plants, I keep a pond. And you know what looks amazing? Lotus. So I have myself some lotus seeds. They have quite hard shells that need to be exposed to water & light without hurting the delicate endosperm inside. To open the shell it seems most of the lotus growing guides have you:

I think it is a Faucaria of some kind. It was labeled “mimicry” which I now understand to describe many types of succulents but didn’t have any reception at the nursery to see if it was a helpful common name. I broke my self imposed no-buy for this little friend because it is so unlike anything else in my collection.
