Open source Peer-to-peer Huggingface with a Social Layer
submitted by
HuggingSocial is a peer-to-peer place to find, discuss and download open AI models and datasets. It is a model hub that no company owns: the list of models, the model cards, the comments and the votes all live on a peer-to-peer network, and the model files themselves are fetched over BitTorrent (or plain HTTP mirrors), verified on your machine with checksums.

If HuggingFace does enshittify, my guess is ModelScope will be the one that takes over, since it’s Chinese and open weights models are dominated by the Chinese
What do you mean “if”? You think Nvidia is paying $12B for it out of the kindness of their hearts?
You’re right
Chinese will enshittify it too and it will be a duopoly
(Copied from the wikipedia article) fuck these AI-Bros!
Cool ! Signed up, but worried about future enshittification: “Monetization scheme for publishers. Model authors will be able to receive financial support from people who would like to donate to them. "
It needs to be an optional secondary layer/addon, so it can’t enshittify the whole eco-system. ‘Monetization’ IS enshittification and will only get worse: popups, ads, fake accounts/recommendation, and all the other std scams will follow if a humble wish to support creators, becomes intrinsic monetization of the ecosystem !
Listings carry the author’s own sponsor links (GitHub Sponsors, Ko-fi, paypal, crypto addresses…). The platform will not take a cut of any payments
Beautyful !
I don‘t get the kill computers angle given this is digital art.
Yeah, it’s kinda silly. As things should be.
pmvj made it.
His shtick is being an ambiguous poster, in a good way.
Anybody could make a website with blind claims in 10min. Why the fuck does this even get posted here?
Very cool, but repo looks a bit light. Posting about it a few days after creation makes me nervous
Also, I thought about doing something like this but couldn’t get past what I see as the obvious CSAM models that would be posted. I’d like to see what your thoughts are around that, to help prevent large booted gov agents from booting down the doors
As long as you have active moderation to remove stuff like that, and cooperate with investigations, you’ll be fine. Pornhub is still up because when they came under the microscope, they purged anything that wasn’t verifiably legal. Plenty of other sites have shut down because they didn’t.
How do you in a completely decentralized system? If everyone hosts their own then there is no moderation
You moderate whatever you host. Even if you have your own instance, your web host, DNS host, or ISP can still cut you off.
But that’s my point, this isn’t like the fediverse, this is true peer to peer, which means one person hosts everyone would theoretically see it, which means everyone would have to see the inevitable horrific shit and prune it themselves.
Sure, if it used something like Gnutella. But then you’d only see what you searched for, and download what you choose.
