This is about an hour-long concert where the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, together with a rock ensemble and a number of top Finnish metal singers, performs some Finnish metal classics. Some of the singers included are Marko Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast), and Samy Elbanna (Children of Bodom, Lost Society).
To mark the centenary of Coltrane’s birth this month, that quest is being documented on a series of previously unreleased, holy grail recordings of his nightclub experiments. Regularly taking up four- to six-week residencies in spaces such as the Jazz Gallery in Manhattan, the Showboat in Washington DC or Pep’s Lounge in Philadelphia, Coltrane would play extended sets of new material that existed purely in the moment of their making: unplanned and unruly.
I don’t know anything about music aside from what I like, but this hits different in the most unique ways. Like, I’m sure by design, but it sounds important even when Raff’s lyrics flow into silly (by design). Like, “Eatin’ spinach when I talk to my dentist,” shouldn’t inspire my late forty-something ass.
There’s a lot of famous artists today, but I’d love to discover new pop music that is oriented around a band instead of an individual. Bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd have all topped the pop charts. Glenn Miller’s Orchestra topped the pop charts in 1940 with a fully instrumental song In the Mood.
I can think of Sammy Rae and Friends, but no others.
