About Us

A Nordic gateway to the Fediverse

Nord.pub

This is a generic Fediverse instance running PieFed and is hosted in the Nordics. The main intended audience is anyone who wants a geographically close instance, although registrations are open to anyone.

I have created this instance as I really like the idea of distributing social networks over large central platforms, and I want to contribute in what way I can. By hosting my own generic instance I hope to share some of the load of hosting this distributed community.

Community policy

Community creation is open to all users of this instance.

By creating a community you understand that it is your responsibility to moderate the community and ensure the server rules are followed.

• Common decency - Conversations should be polite and respectful. No harassment, personal attacks, or threats.
• No discrimination - Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, or any other prejudices has no home here.
• No NSFW communities - some NSFW content may be allowed as long as its within the rules

As an instance operator I do not have any intention to create communities that compete with other Nordic instances.

Federation policy

We aim to have an as open federation policy as possible, and want to avoid defederating / blocking instance unless absolutely necessary.

However, instances that are engaging in the following behaviors without action taken by the administrators might be defederated.

• Illegal content
• Spam
• Excessive hateful content

Infrastructure

A core goal for the infrastructure is high-availability and no dependence on any US-based cloud providers.

The solution for this is the (unholy) Trinity cluster; a cluster of three dedicated servers rented from Hetzner in Finland (Hetzner, hel1). All good things come in threes, like the ability to build high availability with proper quorum.

All user generated content is stored in Hetzners S3 service providing high data resiliency. The database is also backed up to S3, with nightly backups and WAL Archive shipping for Point-In-Time-Recovery. The S3 Buckets are replicated off-site once each night.

Funding

At the moment this is all privately funded, and the expectation is that it will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. In the case significant upgrades are required I will consider taking donations to keep the service running.
